Las Reglas del Español
EL OBJETO: To listen to, speak, read, write, and understand the Spanish language in addition to becoming familiar with the customs, history, and aspects of culture of Spanish-speaking peoples
LAS REGLAS:
1.
|
Speak Spanish. Ten percent of your grade is based upon oral participation in class. It does not matter if your answer is correct or incorrect. Just try! You will make errors. That is a part of language learning and a process through which we all learn. (Personal responsibility, Determination, Excellence)
|
2.
|
Respect others.
1. Be an active listener
2. Consider other people’s viewpoints
3. Stay focused on the topic of discussion
4. Use school appropriate language
5. Be considerate of others, their personal space, and their property
6. Respect others’ right to learn
7. Be polite
(Respect)
|
3.
|
Respect me as the teacher.
1. Be quiet while I am talking. You will miss what I am trying to
teach you if you talk.
2. Avoid interrupting other classes to talk to me
3. See rule two above but relate them to me J
(Respect)
|
4.
|
Be responsible for your own learning. If you need help, come and get it. Complete your work when it is due. If you don’t understand, ask me or someone else. See me during RTI for extra help or go online.
(Personal Responsibility, Determination, and Excellence)
|
5.
|
You are responsible for obtaining and completing make-up work. One day absent equals two days to get work in. Once your due date passes, you will receive a zero for any work that is not completed. Make up tests as soon as possible after an absence. Ask me or another student what took place in class. Check the charts on the side of the room or online. The worksheets will be located in wire baskets on the side of the room near the charts. Please see me during RTI if you have questions or to have your missing work corrected. If you wait too long to do this, you will not receive points for the assignment. Get it corrected immediately.
(Personal Responsibility, Determination, and Excellence)
|
6.
|
Be prepared when you come to class. This means you need paper, pencil, worksheet, packets, and the book every day. Be responsible for your own materials. You will not be allowed to go to your locker to retrieve these items. If you do not have them with you, that is just too bad.
(Personal Responsibility, Determination)
|
7.
|
Be seated when the bell rings. You will be tardy unless you are in the room and seated in your assigned seat WHEN THE BELL RINGS. If you are not in the room when the bell rings, you will be tardy and will have to go get a slip or a pass.
(Personal Responsibility, Respect, Determination)
|
8.
|
Hands off the computer unless you ask me first. Also, please refrain from going behind my desk. (Respect)
|
9.
|
No cheating, copying or plagiarizing. If you cheat, copy, or plagiarize something, you will receive an automatic zero on the assignment. You will also get a zero if I determine that you allowed someone to cheat off your paper. This also counts if you use an online translator for large amounts of material. A word here or there is acceptable. Remember that I know what Spanish you know.
(Personal Responsibility, Integrity, Determination, Excellence)
|
Please look at the Fall Creek High School Spanish page for lesson plans, assignments, and useful links to other websites. If you are absent, check online first and you will be prepared when you return to school. You can print out assignments from home if you need them. Check out the main Spanish page for website links. Links cannot be published due to SPAM.
Each class has their own page so check it for links to ClassZone (which you can use to practice Spanish on your own), helpful videos, online worksheets and other important stuff that you might want to know. J

Ninety percent of your grade is based upon written work. The other ten percent is based upon oral participation. Extra credit will be accepted up to three percent of the total points (ex. 1000 total points = 30 points possible for extra credit). Oral grades and extra credit are not added in until the end of the quarter so keep this in mind when you check your grades from home. Do your work in the first place so that extra credit is not needed. You will have opportunities to earn some points in class.
I use total points so all homework, quizzes, exams, projects, etc. are weighted the same. Final exams may be part of the semester. They are total points as well. I do not count them as a certain percentage of your semester grade. They may take place at the end of second and fourth quarters. Usually, they are not comprehensive but in a sense they are because you must know what went before to understand all parts of the exam. Learning Spanish is a building process. I may choose to exempt for finals. If so, you will need to have an A or A- each quarter and for the semester to be exempt. I always reserve the right to change my mind.
If you do your homework, study for tests, and participate in class, you will succeed this year in Spanish. I will be available during my prep hour (s) when I don’t have study hall, during RTI Period, and after school until 3:45 so that you can get extra help. There are no excuses for not getting help! You can go online as well.
LA DISCIPLINA: For rule infractions, the process is as follows:
1. Warning and/or reminder of Pride violations (Personal Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence)
2. Menos cincos if minor/menos diez if major infraction/talking
3. Possible detention with me if the situation does not get resolved
4. If you do not serve detention with me, it will be doubled, sent to the office, and parent/guardian informed
I reserve the right to make decisions that do not follow this process when misbehavior is severe. You may also be removed from class and if you are removed twice during the year, you will fail the course.
You will serve your detention during the week that it is given. If it is not served, it will be doubled and sent to the office. If the detention is doubled, twenty five points will be removed from your behavior grade. Do not let this happen.
MENOS CINCO POLICY/MENOS DIEZ POLICY
At the beginning of each quarter, you will receive one hundred points for behavior. This will be your first grade and it will change weekly so you can see how your behavior may change your grade. You can receive “menos cinco” or “menos diez” for a number of reasons. Menos cincos will be minor and menos diez will be more major or when you cause a disruption to the class. This year, menos diez will be given for excessive talking or talking while I am teaching.
Some examples are:
- Talking out of turn, talking too much, talking during instruction
- Using inappropriate language
- Working on other class assignments (that will be confiscated by Sra.)
- Writing a note to friends
- Not following directions or participating when asked
You will not be able to recuperate these lost points through extra credit. Try not to get “menos cinco/diez” in the first place!! The behavior grade is included in the written grade percentage and is worth the same as an exam.
CLASS PARTICIPATION
Ten percent of your final grade each quarter is based upon participation. You need to volunteer in class, raise your hand, answer some questions, and try to use your Spanish as much as possible. This is not difficult but does require some effort on your part. It does not matter if you are right or wrong. Just try! Your participation can increase your grade or decrease it as well. Try to answer at least once a day. I take into account that in larger classes there are fewer chances to participate and in smaller ones, there are many more opportunities to do so. Using the language is your main goal, right or wrong.
Spanish III students will be expected to use Spanish as much as possible (most of the time). The use of English will be more limited this year. I am going to keep track of the number of times that English is used when it did not need to be. Speak in Spanish all the time and simply ask in Spanish how to say something if you do not remember. Remember that I know what you know!
EXTRA CREDITO
Extra credit will be given for the following items. The point total is displayed in the final column. If an item does not fall under the categories listed, I will make the decision according to how much effort a student exerted when making/bringing in the item.
Category of item
|
Point total
|
Newspaper article, Internet printout
|
1
|
Relevant Internet website
|
2
|
Smaller items of realia (instructions, food boxes, etc.)
|
2-3
|
Larger items of realia (blanket, sombrero, etc.)
|
3-4
|
Art project (poster, piñata, etc.)
|
5-10
|
Written project (report in own words) or authentic food item
|
7-15
|
Some examples of what will not count for extra credit:
- Statements that cannot be proven (ex. I saw a Mexican person at the grocery store or any place)
- Clothing tags
- Inappropriate items (bottles of alcohol or t-shirts)
- Excessive items from a restaurant such as Taco Bell
- Excessive comments about video games/characters etc.
In summary, you will be able to increase your grade up to three percent through extra credit. The points will not carry over from one quarter to the next.
The philosophy behind this is that a student should be able to go from a B+ to an A- but one receiving an F should not be able to get a C through extra credit. When you bring in these items, you are showing me that you are interested in seeing how Spanish is applied to life outside of the classroom and that you are willing to put in a little extra effort. The more effort you put in towards extra credit, the more points you will get.
Please talk to me if you have ideas for extra credit and I can help you find resources. Bring in the items before or after school so that I can have time to examine them. RTI Period is a good time too.
If you have an interesting item to bring in or if you have a CD or video to play, we will do that at the beginning of the hour on Fridays only. Please make sure that you bring in these items ahead of time because ALL CDS, VIDEOS, and WEBSITES WILL NEED TO BE PREVIEWED BY ME before they are displayed in front of the class.
I am looking forward to this year as you will all be expanding your knowledge of the Spanish language and culture in addition to having fun! J
