Mr. Strand in Your Classroom
Mr. Strand loves coming to your classrooms to teach important lessons to your students. Where do these lessons come from, you may ask? I'll try to answer that question here.
Just like math, social studies, science, and language arts teachers have standards that must be met, so to do school counselors. As part of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program, school counselors in the State of Wisconsin have student content standards that must be met across three domain areas - academic, personal/social, and career - by the time students reach grades 4, 8, and 12. In fact, there are 121 student benchmarks across 9 student content standards that need to be met.

During the spring of 2008, I created a "Menu of Topics" that would be appropriate for me to teach according to the standards. I asked each grade level, K-6, to review the menu and identify topics that would be most relevant for me to teach to their class in the scheduled guidance time block.

Based on the results of the menu review, I identified curriculums to use that attempted to meet the identified needs of each grade level. During the 2008-2009 school year, I began to use these curriculums in the K-5 classrooms.
The curriculums chosen for use included:
-
-
Connected and Respected
-
Too Good for Drugs
-
A Career Awareness/Exploration Unit - Mostly Home-Grown
